Background. Before we try to solve the problem, let's understand how the industry works.

Unlike air travel, where the unit is a passenger, or trucking, where the unit is a truckload, the global shipping industry is built around one standardised unit: the container, twenty foot or forty foot.

The container is the universal building block of global trade. If you want to redesign or disrupt shipping, do not think in terms of ships first. Think in terms of containers. Every innovation in logistics, automation, decarbonisation, and routing ultimately comes back to moving containers faster, cheaper, safer, and with lower emissions.

Which means half the work is already done. Instead of a ship that carries hundreds of containers, we need to redesign the industry around a vessel that moves a single container. Doing that would make the entire process inherently more efficient.

The building blocks of the solution:

• A vehicle for transport.
• Renewable fuel.
• Communications.
• Navigation that is self-aware.
